A Smarter Way Through Immigration (Right Now)

If you’ve traveled internationally recently, you’ve likely felt it—re-entry into the U.S. is still a bit… unpredictable.

I experienced it firsthand returning home last week. What should have been a routine arrival turned into long, slow-moving immigration lines with very little clarity on timing. And right now, that’s not unusual.

The recent DHS shutdown created real strain across airport operations. Even though Global Entry has now been restored, the ripple effects are still being felt—staffing gaps, longer queues, and inconsistent processing at some airports.

In short: the “fast lane” is back—but it’s not always as fast or as consistent as it used to be.

That’s why we’re recommending a simple, smart backup plan.

Mobile Passport Control (MPC) is a free app that allows you to submit your passport and customs information directly from your phone before arrival. Once you land, you’ll receive a QR code and can proceed to a dedicated MPC lane—often significantly faster than the standard queue.

You can learn more and download the app here:

It’s quick to set up, requires no pre-approval, and works at many major U.S. airports.

And here’s the key:

Even if you have Global Entry, there’s no downside to having MPC ready to go.

Think of it as a way to “double dip”—two potential fast-track options in your pocket, depending on how things are operating when you land.

Is it perfect? No.

But right now, it’s one of the easiest ways to reduce uncertainty and give yourself flexibility at the end of a long travel day.

The bigger takeaway?

Travel is running smoothly again in many ways—but not always predictably.

And the smartest travelers aren’t relying on just one path through the airport.

They’re giving themselves options.
